Join the campaign to let people vote in Nebraska

The call to action is to convince the Nebraska state legislature to pass legislation to remove the two-year waiting period to restoring voting rights for returning Nebraska citizens in the 2018 legislative session. Tens of thousands of returning Nebraska citizens face an arbitrary two-year waiting period after completing the terms of their sentence before their voting rights are restored. This policy causes confusion for returning citizens and Nebraska’s hard working election officials. This call to action is about voting rights. This call to action is about racial justice. This call to action is about good government and smart criminal justice reforms.

Last legislative session, the legislature passed a bill that would have restored the voting rights of these Nebraska citizens, only to see Governor Ricketts veto the bill. This upcoming session, we will seek to secure the 30 votes needed to override his veto. In doing so, we will bring Nebraska in line with the majority of the nation. Thirty-eight other states allow returning citizens to vote after they complete their sentences. Maine and Vermont permit citizens to vote, even while in prison. With the support of People Power activism, we can bring change to Nebraska.
